The Produttori del Barbaresco, founded in 1958, is a co-operative of more than 50 members working 100 hectares (250 acres) of Nebbiolo vineyards in the Barbaresco appelation, which is almost one sixth of the total vineyard area of the small Barbaresco zone. The vineyards are between 200-400 metres above sea level. Each family is in full control of its land, growing Nebbiolo grapes with a skill and dedication borne of centuries.
Here in the foothills of the Alps, there is a unique micro-climate of hot summers with cool nights and very cold winters. It appears to be the only environment where the Nebbiolo grape variety is at home, producing great wines which can be cellared for decades. Barbaresco is the lesser known sister of the great Barolo, separated from that zone by the town of Alba. Such is the quality of its output it deserves recognition as one of the great red wines of Italy.
